21 things at 21
In honor of my 21st birthday this past week, here are 21 silly little thoughts.
Embarrassment is fake — Our minds tell us that we’re embarrassed. What happens if we just decide not to be?
You have as much fun as you pretend to have — A good mindset can do wonders for you, and pretend fun usually turns into real fun.
Sleep when you’re dead — You’re only allowed to be young and dumb for a finite amount of time. Take advantage!
Don’t split a pole when you’re walking — It’ll bring bad luck and it’s easily avoidable.
It’s okay to care a lot — There is no issue with loving easily and being a little sentimental. It’s okay that you want to do a deep dive into everything you have ever liked. Indy Blue said it’s cool to care. I’m saying it too.
Do things alone — Rely on only yourself, worry about only yourself, have fun with only yourself. Travel alone, eat alone, go to a concert alone.
Write it all out — The good, the bad, the pretty, the ugly. All of it. You’ll want it one day. Memory (at least mine) can’t capture the in-the-moment feelings like words can.
Don’t travel hungover — Or you’ll find yourself throwing up on the side of the road in two different countries in one day.
You don’t have to please everyone — It’s so unrealistic and you’re never going to do it.
Be aware of your surroundings — For safety reasons and because you never know when you’ll find money on the ground.
Club dancing is a fundamental life skill — (this one is borrowed from my mom) Not many things are more fun than letting loose on a dance floor.
Don’t live in the past — Memories and what-if’s can be haunting. But there are reasons why it isn’t your current reality. Don’t let it dictate your future.
Silver Springs (Fleetwood Mac) and The Love Club (Lorde) are the greatest songs of all time.
Leave your hometown — At least once, at least for a while. The world is wide and you need to see more of it.
Your brother is your best friend or your worst enemy — It depends on the day and there is no in between.
It’s okay to be proud of yourself — I’m proud of me. And I should be.
No one is looking at you — No one else sees your pimple or notices how bloated you are. They’re too busy worrying about themselves.
You and your friends will grow up at different paces — No one is early or behind.
Men will always suck — In some shape or form, or for some reason, they always will. Even if it’s just a little bit.
Be interested to be interesting — Care about what other people have to say and what they enjoy.
It’s a good life — Bad things happen and some days suck. But it is a good life and I intend to make the most of it. Because what’s the point if I don’t?
